TOPIC: The ABCs of the CBC: What, When, and Why
The complete blood count (CBC) is one of the most sensitive and valuable tools for detecting deviations from health and assessing disease severity in veterinary patients. This presentation will review the components of the CBC, discuss when and why a CBC should be performed, and provide practical insights into interpreting red blood cell, white blood cell, and platelet abnormalities. Attendees will also learn about the medical value of the IDEXX inVue Dx™ Cellular Analyzer and what to expect when running samples for blood morphology evaluation. The discussion will highlight how in-house blood morphology assessment can enhance diagnostic confidence by identifying clinically relevant cellular abnormalities and providing deeper insights into patient health.
SPEAKER BIO:
Dr. Joy Bunkley was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. After high school, she left home to pursue her childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tuskegee University in Alabama. Following veterinary school, Dr. Bunkley remained in the Southeast, practicing small animal medicine in Georgia as both an associate veterinarian and later a Chief of Staff. After more than five years in clinical practice, she returned home to Los Angeles. In 2019, Dr. Bunkley transitioned into shelter medicine, where she practiced for two years before joining IDEXX Laboratories as a Professional Services Veterinarian supporting the Los Angeles region. Throughout her career, Dr. Bunkley has demonstrated strong leadership, medical expertise, and business acumen while supporting veterinary teams and advancing patient care.
