TOPIC: Urgent Orthopedics for Primary Veterinarians

Summary:  The patient assessment, stabilization, and formulation of a balanced diagnostic plan for urgent orthopedic cases will be presented and discussed. The three areas of; limb fracture, joint luxation, and distal extremity trauma will be examined as common urgent orthopedic presentations for the general practitioner. Discussion of initial stabilization, diagnostics, treatment options, their optimal timing, and the relative success rates of intervention will be presented.

1. Ian Gordon Holsworth ~ Introduction of urgent orthopedics (UO) (10 min)

a. Initial assessment of the UO case

b. Prioritizing patient stabilization

c. Initial diagnostic modalities and when to utilize

d. Optimal and acceptable treatment timing

2. Rebecca Webb ~ Traumatic Joint Instability and Dislocation (15 min)

a. Acute traumatic, severe joint instability of: hip, stifle, shoulder, elbow

b. Hip luxation options; closed vs. open reduction options and success rates

3. Hilary Ludwig ~ Distal Extremity Trauma (15 min)

a. Carpal and tarsal traumatic instability; severity assessment and stabilization options

b. Metacarpal and metatarsal fracture; coaptation vs. surgical fixation

c. Digit fracture and luxation treatment options

4. Ian Gordon Holsworth ~ Fracture Management (15 min)

a. Fracture radiology; patient positioning and radiographic views

b. External coaptation vs. surgical stabilization

c. Timing of surgical intervention

d. Current fracture repair techniques and relative success

SPEAKERS BIO: 

Dr. Holsworth is a 1991 graduate of the University of Melbourne Veterinary School, Post-graduation Dr. Holsworth spent 8 years in general practice before becoming an examined Member of the Surgery College of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in 1995. A surgical Fellowship at the Michigan State Veterinary Teaching Hospital was completed in 2000 prior to commencement of a three-year surgical Resident position at the University of California, Davis Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Dr. Holsworth is currently the practice Director and Senior Surgeon of VetSurg in Ventura, California.

Commencing in 2006, Dr Holsworth has provided national and international surgical instruction in didactic lectures, surgical laboratories and via digital platforms. Areas of expertise include minimally invasive joint surgery with a special focus on arthroscopy and joint stabilization. In 2018, Dr. Holsworth was designated by the Board of Regents of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) as an ACVS Founding Fellow in Minimally Invasive Surgery. Joining a select few in the world with this accreditation, Dr. Holsworth was selected for his exemplary training, experience, and practice in the multidisciplinary approach to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of patients undergoing minimally invasive therapies and for his devotion to research in the field of minimally invasive surgery.

Dr. Hilary Ludwig originally hails from Montreal, Canada. Hilary spent several of her pre-college years growing up in Oklahoma. She graduated with a B.S. degree in Zoology from the University of Oklahoma and earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, with high honors, from Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Hilary then went on to complete a small animal and surgery rotating internship at the University of Georgia. This was followed by her surgical residency at the University of Pennsylvania. During her residency, Dr. Ludwig performed research on canine platelet rich plasma and feline renal transplantation. After her internship and residency, she became an examined Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS). While Dr. Ludwig enjoys both orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, her special interests include minimally invasive surgery, brachycephalic airway syndrome, and surgical oncology. In her spare time, Dr. Ludwig loves to run, try new restaurants, travel abroad, and ride her horse, Fauve. She also enjoys spending time with her husky cross, Lilly, and four lovable kitties, Nigel, Newton, Fig and Big Red.

Dr. Webb is a graduate of the University of Melbourne Veterinary School and an examined Member of the Surgery College of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. She attained American College of Veterinary Surgeon Board certification as a specialist small animal surgeon and enjoys all aspects of soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, especially minimally invasive surgery.
