TOPIC: Extracorporeal Therapies in the ER and ICU

Summary: This lecture will provide an overview of the modalities and indications for extracorporeal therapies in dogs and cats.  We will discuss the principles and indications for intermittent hemodialysis, hemoperfusion and therapeutic plasma exchange.  We will explore case-based examples to highlight indications for extracorporeal therapies in patients with acute kidney injury, intoxications and immune-mediated disease. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the principles of intermittent hemodialysis and when it is indicated for patients with acute kidney injury and intoxications.
  • Understand the principles of hemoperfusion and when this therapy is indicated for patients with intoxications.
  • Understand the principles of therapeutic plasma exchange and when it would be indicated for patients with immune-mediated disease and intoxications.

    SPEAKER BIO:  Amanda Spillane, BVSc (Hons), MS, DACVEEC

    Dr. Spillane graduated veterinary school from the University of Queensland, Australia. After completing a small animal rotating internship at Queensland Veterinary Specialists, Dr. Spillane completed a residency in Emergency & Critical Care at the University of Illinois. Dr. Spillane obtained Diplomate status with the American College of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care in 2022 and recently completed a fellowship in Extracorporeal Therapies with The Ohio State University. Interests include: acute kidney injury, fluid therapy, sepsis, and extracorporeal toxin removal. Outside of work, she likes to hang out with her Australian cat Zoe, tries to keep her plants alive, bakes kidney-shaped cookies, exercises, and hits the beach.
