TOPIC: Filtering the Baddies out of the Blood: Updates on Extracorporeal Therapy

Summary: 

This lecture will cover an overview of the modalities and indications for extracorporeal therapies in dogs and cats. It will include case-based examples of how extracorporeal therapies can be used in the emergency & critical care setting. The lecture will explore intermittent hemodialysis, hemoperfusion and therapeutic plasma exchange, including the science behind the treatment, indications, complications and case-based examples. We will also discuss logistical factors that should be considered when referring a case for extracorporeal therapy.

    SPEAKER BIO:  Dr. Amanda Spillane, BVSc (Hons), MS, DACVECC

    Dr. Spillane graduated veterinary school from the University of Queensland, Australia. After completing a small animal rotating internship at Queensland Veterinary Specialists, Dr. Spillane completed a residency in Emergency & Critical Care at the University of Illinois.  She obtained Diplomate status with the American College of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care in 2022, after which she completed a fellowship in Extracorporeal Therapies with The Ohio State University.  It is here that Dr. Spillane found her passion for all things kidneys and extracorporeal therapy.  She is currently continuing her kidney journey as one of the inaugural residents with the American College of Veterinary Nephrology & Urology.  Dr. Spillane joined the ACCESS LA team in October 2023 to restart the Nephrology & Extracorporeal Therapies Department and is excited to be able to offer this vital service to all the pets of Los Angeles!   Outside of work, Dr. Spillane likes to hang out with her Australian cat Zoe, Kittitian cat Figaro and partner Jose, and enjoys gardening, exercising and relaxing at the beach.
