TOPIC: Updates in the Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus in Cats

Program Description:

This lecture will discuss a new medication to treat diabetes mellitus in cats, bexagliflozin. An introduction to the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor class of drugs including mechanism of action will be discussed. Detailed outlines of appropriate patient selection and monitoring considerations will be covered.

Program Agenda:

  • ·         A brief overview of insulin dependent vs. non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus
  • ·         Owner barriers to treatment
  • ·         SGLT2 inhibitor mode of action
  • ·         Bexacat/bexagliflozin overview and results of pivotal study
  • ·         Patient selection and monitoring protocols
  • ·         Case examples

Learning Objectives:

  • 1.       Understand the mechanism of action of SGLT2 in inhibitors
  • 2.       Realize the critical importance of patient selection and monitoring and what steps are needed to safely and successfully utilize this new medication
  • 3.       Learn what beta-hydroxybutyrate testing is, why it is important to treatment of cats on this class of medication
  • 4.       Identify and appropriately treat cats that develop DKA or euglycemic DKA while taking bexagliflozin

SPEAKER BIO:

Chris George, DVM, Practice Limited to Internal Medicine

Dr. George grew up in Kansas City and graduated from veterinary school at Kansas State University in 2013. He completed a rotating internship at VCA Mission in the Kansas City area, followed by an Internal Medicine residency at Kansas State University. After residency, Dr. George moved to the Pacific Northwest where he practiced internal medicine in the Tacoma and Olympia area prior to joining Elanco. His professional interests include endoscopy, gastrointestinal disease, and endocrinology. When not working, he enjoys hiking, playing golf, cooking, and exploring all the PNW has to offer with his wife, two dogs and cat.
